Abstract
This paper explores the character and role of Īśvara in Yogā sūtra. In Indian philosophy Īśvara generally means the self-existent God who creates the world. But Īśvara in the Yoga system does not have this role. Instead it has an excellent spiritual role as a pure Spirit (Purusa). I understand that Īśvara as shown in Yogā sūtra has four characters: the special Purusa, an always liberated being, a permanent being unlimited by time, and the seed of omniscient wisdom. Of these four the most basic and characteristic of the system is that of special Purusa. If we say that Īśvara is the Creator then it will give rise to a serious problem in the structure of yoga philosophy. Because in the system creation of the world is attributed to prakrti with which Īśvara has no relation, being himself always free and liberated. The role given to Īśvara in Yogā sūtra instead is that of assistance to a practioner in attaining samādhi. However, it is understood that practice and renunciation are two major paths to samādhi in Yogā sūtra. Therefore, I would conclude that Īśvara-pranidhāna in Yogā sūtra is not a main means but an assistant/supplementary one to the end of realizing samādhi.
