Abstract
Yoga philosophy is the most profound theory in regard to a subject of mind except Buddhism in Indian Philosophical tradition. Especially the aphorism ‘yogaś cittavṛttinirodhaḥ’ in Yoga sutra Ⅰ-2 is to be considered as a definition as well as a main point that can be understood traditionally. The questions should be raised that what is the reason of it and from where the theoretical sources come out then. This paper is to explain the questions I suggested as such. To deal with it, We must try to solve a few matters as follow. Firstly, the meaning of mind-field(citta) and category of it, which is called ‘inner instrument’-buddhi, ahamkara and manas. Secondly, what is the viewpoint of arguing the subject, such as ontological or epistemological aspect accordingly. Thirdly, what is the differences between the two arguments and the reason of it questioned the above. The controversy reach that the matter of constructional analysis is up to the phrase of Yoga sutra Ⅰ-2 in the direction of sorting out a whole 195 aphorisms of Yoga sutra. Consequently, we can epitomize the understanding of yoga sutra in three characteristics. First, one should consider a citta in aspect of epistemologically rather then ontological. Second, Yoga philosophy accept a plural puruaṣa unlike any other indian philosophy. Third, The theory of satkāryavāda(doctrine of the pre-existent effect) is a fundamental system of Yoga along with sāmkhya. An assumption to have a plural puruaṣa means that each person has one’s own sole which lead to one’s final direction is different each other accordingly. A personal goal is the one that Yoga philosophy should have suggested. I finalize an argument with that of the reason why concept of mind- field(citta) in a category of ‘inner instrument’ should be emphasized. I found that 195 aphorisms in Yoga sutra are sorted out the way how to practice mind- field according to one’s capacity. This is to propose that Yoga sutra has a constructional system according to the process of yogaś cittavṛttinirodhaḥ.
