Abstract
This paper aims to study the theme of untouchability in Premchand by referring to the 『Godān』. Since 1921 onwards, the untouchable characters do appear through the novels and stories of Premchand. Premchand's untouchables are extremely poor and below dignity in status. If we classify untouchable characters, we will find that the caste chamār is prominent in stories and novels of Premchand. In 『Godān』 we find chamār like Siliyā and her two anonymous brothers, father Harkhū and mother Kaliyā. In 『Godān』 Siliyā had to do hard work for day and night, in the fields of her lover Mātādīn as a token of her love; but in response to that he is unprepared even to part with a single grain. When Mātādīn denies the equal status to Siliyā, her father declares either we will make Mātādīn chamār today or else we will mix up our blood with his. Immediately her brothers cut the sacred thread around the Mātādīn's neck and try to pollute him, pushing a piece of bone into his mouth. What he says is that “You cannot turn us into a Brahmin, but we can turn you into a chamār.” Due to this faith in socialist humanism Premchand laid the problems of untouchable of a new realistic literary movement in 『Godān』. Suffering the indignity of a unequal society Premchand develop courage in the ultimate victory of the untouchable.
