Abstract

There are traditionally suggested two kind of etymological analyses of the word PĀRAMITĀ that is one of the important terms in the Prajñāpāramiā-Sūtras. The two have basically different point of view about it’s origin, the one regarding it as compound(PĀRAM=ITĀ) and the other as simple word(PĀRAMI-TĀ). As a result, for the meaning of the term, the former defines as ‘reaching (I-TĀ) to the opposite shore (PĀRAM)’, and the latter as ‘perfect-ness, perfection (PĀRAMI-TĀ)’. Still today, however, under the circumstances being no critical arguments about logicality and validity of them, this paper aims firstly at suggesting, solving and revising their serious internal problems which occur in the process of word-formation especially from the point of view of compound. It aims also secondly at presenting morphologically and semantically optimal realistic possibility of etymology of PĀRAMITĀ from the point of view of simple word. Morpheme structure of PĀRAMITĀ meaning ‘perfection’ is 〚pāra-ma∼i-tā-〛, and linguistic processes which should be involved in this structure for this paper are not only superlative, vṛddhi, devī-declension, abstractness as known, and analogy like dissimilation and back-formation as unknown. The processing of word-formation this paper try to prove is as follows : para- (BASE, adjective ‘high’) ⇒ para-ma- (SUPERLATIVE, adjective ‘highest’) ⇒ pāramī- [pāra-ma∼ī- SUFFIX OF DEVĪ-DECLENSION & VRI- DDHI, adjective feminine ‘highest’] ⇒ *pāramī-tā- [ABSTRACTNESS SUFFIX, noun feminine ‘highest-ness, perfection, complete-ness’] ⇒ pārami-tā- [DISSIMILATION & ASSIMILATION noun feminine ‘highest-ness, perfection, complete-ness’] ⇒ pārami- [BACK-FORMATION].
