산업패널 자료를 이용한 한국의 대인도 FDI가 교역에 미치는 영향 분석

본고는 한국의 대인도 수출이 증가하지 않고, 수입은 감소하는 원인을 찾기 위한 한 방편으로 한국의 대인도 FDI가 대인도 수출과 수입에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 동 분석을 위하여 본고는 한국표준산업분류를 이용하여 총 22개의 산업으로 재분류하고 2008~2015년간의 패널 자료를 이용하였다. 특히 FDI가 산업별로 ‘불연속성’과 ‘영(0)의 가치’를 갖고 있다는 특징으로 인하여 기존의 자연로그를 취한 중력모형 분석을 하지 않고 그 대신에 PPML분석 방법을 적용하였다. 분석결과, FDI는 수출과는 미미한 양의 관계를 보이고 있으며, 수입에 대해서는 통계적으로 유의하지 않는 결과를 보이고 있다. 이러한 결과로 보면, FDI가 수출을 유발하기는 쉽지 않는 것으로 판단된다. 또한 FDI가 대기업의 경우에 한하여 교역에 영향을 준다고 나타나, FDI에 의한 대인도 수출을 유발하기 위해서는 대기업 중심으로 상당한 규모의 투자가 이루어져야 할 것으로 판단된다. 이러한 결과 현재의 대인도 FDI 규모로는 양자간의 교역량을 증가시키는 데 매우 한계가 있다는 점을 잘 보여주고 있다. 더욱이 수입유발은 쉽지 않을 것으로 나타남에 따라 한국과 인도간의 무역불균형을 FDI로 해결하기는 어려울 것으로 분석된다. 인도의 소득 증가는 대한국 수출에 부정적인 영향을 미칠 것으로 분석되어, 향후 인도의 경제성장은 한국의 대인도 무역수지에서 인도에게 더욱 불리하게 작용할 것으로 판단된다. 따라서 본고는 이에 대응할 수 있는 품목개발 및 CEPA 개선 등의 양자간 경제협력이 요구된다는 정책적 시사점을 제시하였다.
Abstract
This study is to analyze the effect of FDI on trade between Korea and India to realize the reasons that the recent bilateral trade between the two countries have persisted. To this end, 22 sector-wise FDI panel data are used over the period of 2008~2015. The PPML method is applied to analyze the effect because of too many zero-values FDI data. The results show that the FDIs have positive relations with export but are insignificant for imports. However, the coefficients of FDI on export are very small, implying there are minimal effects of FDI on trade. This implies that conglomerate FDIs prefer to SMEs’ ones for improving the trade. Moreover, the results indicate that the trade imbalance will be not resolved easily between Korea and India as FDI have insignificant effects on Korea’s import from India. Since the increase in India income reduce the export for the Indian domestic market, the trade imbalance will become widen in the future. Thus, this study suggests a political implication that the bilateral economic cooperation are needed to resolve or reduce the imbalance with diversifying trade or improvement of CEPA.
