초록

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kharagpur’s 2022 calendar, “Recovery of the Foundations of Indian Knowledge Systems”, has brought to the fore the Aryan question, yet again. The calendar claimed to prove false the “Aryan invasion/migration theory” and conversely claims that India’s Vedic culture is indigenous. This paper shall juxtapose these claims by the Hindu Right Wing (the Hindutva ideologues who view minorities in India as ‘outsiders’ and only Hindus as ‘insiders’ claiming homogeneity along religious lines) that the creators of the Veda were indigenous to the contrary scientific and historical understanding that Aryans migrated to India from outside and brought the Vedic culture with them. This exercise of glorifying the indigenous origins of the Aryans and the Vedic culture of the Indian civilization is reflective of the need to create the idea of a monolithic version of our past and so to indulge in the “Hinduization of History”. This paper shall critically revisit the Aryan Debate, bringing in aspects of the historical and scientific scholarship that exists on the subject drawing attention to how the past is invoked in the present in revisiting narratives of Indian History especially in light of the ideologies of the present.
