Abstract

This research reviews the perceptions on Indian history formed and developed by the British colonial government and the scholar-administrators through the various reports of Census of India published in colonial period. The three earliest reports of the late nineteenth century shows the historical perception of romantic orientalism that ancient times, such as ‘vedic age’, is glorified and the convergence with ‘aboriginal’ culture led it to the gradual popularization and decay. Reports of census published in the early twentieth century developed Aryan theory into racial theory and theory of Aryan invasion through the ‘scientific’ methods of anthropometry, physical anthropology, and archaeology. Such elaborated Aryan theory is a narrative of the Aryan movement, adventure, and victory, in a sense. Aryan theory as a historical narrative ultimately connotes the logic of superiority and inferiority based on racism which justifies western colonialism and supports imperialism. Aryan theory of race appeared in the reports of Census of India was expended not only to the relationship between language and race but also to the relationship with region and caste, which led to the naissance of regionalism and casteism in India.
