Abstract
This study was to examine whether science classes using optical illusions positively impact the interest in science and science curiosity of 68 fifth-grade elementary school students (28 boys, 40 girls) and to identify which epistemic emotions significantly predict situational interest triggered during these optical illusion classes. The results from this study were as follows. First, after science classes using optical illusions, students' level of interest in science and science curiosity increased. Second, during the science classes using optical illusions, among the emotions of surprise, curiosity, and confusion experienced by the students, both surprise and curiosity significantly predicted triggered situational interest in a positive manner. However, confusion did not significantly predict triggered situational interest. Based on these results, the implications for science education regarding the development of interest and curiosity in science were discussed.
