영화를 활용한 영어교육: 영화 Wonder를 중심으로

본 연구의 목적은 한 편의 할리우드 영화를 체계적으로 분석하여 영어교육 현장에 접목시키기위함이다. 제6차 교육과정 이후, 영어 수업 현장에서는 정규 교과서와 함께 실제적 자료의 활용을권장하고 있다. 이에 실제적 자료 가운데 하나인 영화를 영어 수업에 도입하기 위해 영화 선정기준에 근거, Wonder라는 영화를 선정하였다. 연구자는 반복적인 시청을 통해 영화 속에서 영어교육관점에서 유용하다고 판단되는 요소가 많이 포함된 열 장면을 선정하였다. 선정된 열 장면은 언어형식, 어휘 및 표현, 발음, 문화 등 네 가지 측면으로 심도 있게 분석되었다. 네 가지 측면에서 열장면이 차례대로 제시되고, 장면 대사에서 각각의 영어교육 요소가 추출되어 부가 설명과 함께 제시되었다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 언어형식 측면에서는 부정사, 동명사, 비교급, 최상급, 가정법, 수동태, 관계대명사 등 다양한 언어형식 요소가 장면 대사를 통해 추출되었다. 둘째, 어휘 및표현 측면에서는 ‘trust fund kid’, ‘bat a thousand’, ‘a good egg’ 등 EFL 학생들이 생소하게느낄 수 있는 표현들이 장면 대사에서 추출되었다. 셋째, 발음 측면에서는 ‘축약’, ‘연음’, ‘플랩현상’등 다양한 발음 요소가 장면 대사로부터 추출되었다. 마지막으로 문화 측면에서는‘미국 학교 문화’, ‘음식 문화’, ‘국경일’, ‘할로윈’ 등 다양한 문화 요소가 장면 속에서추출되었다. 네 가지 측면에서 추출된 영어교육 요소 중 영역별로 몇 가지 구체적 예가 상세히제공되었다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 영화 활용 영어교육에 대한 제언이 이루어졌다.
Abstract
This study explores how to utilize movies in EFL classrooms by analyzing a Hollywood movie systematically. Since the 6th National Curriculum was initiated, using authentic materials along with regular textbooks in English classrooms has been recommended. Based on the criteria for movie selection, a movie titled Wonder was chosen which involved a large portion of daily conversational English, abundant cultural information, and a touching storyline that shows the value of family love. In the process of watching the movie, ten scenes were chosen and analyzed from the perspective of grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and culture. This study presented the ten scenes from these four perspectives in turn. It extracted several educational elements from each scene and offered additional explanations related to those elements. According to the results of this study, grammar points such as ‘to infinitive’, ‘gerund phrases’, ‘subjunctive mood’, and ‘voice’were drawn from the ten scenes. Some useful expressions also were drawn from these scenes. Some examples are ‘trust fund kid’, ‘bat a thousand’, ‘a good egg’, etc. Pertaining to pronunciation, phonological phenomena such as contraction, linking, and flap phenomena were drawn from the scenes. Lastly, some cultural points were also drawn from the scenes. They were related to school, food, holidays, Halloween, etc. Several elements from each domain were presented in-depth as examples of each domain. Based on the analysis of this study, several suggestions were offered.
