Abstract
The results of the study, which aimed to provide basic data for instructing elementary school students to use smartphones through the analysis of ‘cooperative problem-solving ability’ and ‘self-control’ according to the ‘smartphone dependency’ of elementary school students, were as follows. According to the level of ‘smartphone dependency’ of elementary school students, ‘cooperative problem-solving ability’ was in the order of ‘general user group’, ‘high-risk user group’, and ‘potential risk user group’, and the same was shown in the sub-factor of ‘ability to maintain relationships and resolve conflicts’ and ‘cooperative decision-making ability’, and there was a statistically significant difference (p<.001). The ‘self-control’ of elementary school students according to the level of ‘smartphone dependency’ was in the order of ‘general user group’, ‘potential risk user group’, and ‘high-risk user group’, and the same was true for the ‘impulse suppression’ sub-factor and ‘temptation resistance’ sub-factor, with a statistically significant difference (p<.001). The ‘self-control’ of the ‘delayed satisfaction’ sub-factor and the ‘emotional control’ sub-factor were the highest in the ‘general user group’, followed by the ‘high-risk user group’ and the ‘potential risk user group’. However, statistically, there was a significant difference in the ‘delayed gratification’ sub-factor (p<.001), while there was no statistically significant difference in the ‘emotion control’ sub-factor. This showed that the cultivation of ‘cooperative problem-solving ability’ and ‘self-control’, which are emphasized as important core competencies and qualities in modern society, is related to ‘smartphone dependency’. Therefore, various educational sites such as schools and families require continuous educational efforts in the direction of reducing ‘smartphone dependency’.
