Abstract

This paper identified the types of common socially inconvenient behavior between Korean and Japan college students and compared their perception of "social annoyance," socially inconvenient behavior by type of behavior to provide basic knowledge that helps Koreans visiting or staying in Japan to understand the behavior patterns which may cause social inconveniences felt sensitively uncomfortale by Japanese people in public spaces. Before comparing the participants in the two countries, the present study developed "'the Scale for Social annoyance", which are currently recognized in Korea and Japan. Using this Scale, the present study measured the perception of adults in both countries about socially inconvenient behaviors and analyzed their perception of social annoyance and differences by type of behavior. The results revealed that common socially inconvenient behaviors betwwen Korean and Japanese college students were categorized into 'behaviors violating others' rights,' 'behaviors lacking in consideration and related to moral values,' and 'behaviors violating rules and manners,' Furthermore, a t-test-which was conducted to compare differences between the Korean and Japanese participants in their perception about the above behaviors-showed the Korean college students had a significantly higher perception of social annoyance in the first factor 'behaviors violating others' right.' By contrast, Japan college students showed a significantly higher perception of social annoyance in the second factor 'behaviors lacking inconsideration and related to moral values' and the third factor 'behaviors violating rules and manners.'
