Abstract

The purpose of the present research is the investigation of the causal relationship between the intention to interchange with citizens and those cultures, and the images of citizens in neighboring countries among Japanese female university students. Specifically, a panel study by questionnaire research on the same individuals at two different times has been conducted. Both the cross-lagged effect model and the synchronous effect model have been used in the analysis. The results of the analysis of causal relationship clearly and consistently found that the intention to interchange with Korean and Chinese citizens and those cultures caused positive images of Korean and Chinese people in the sense of affinity and the sense of trust, in both the cross-lagged effect model and in the synchronous effect model. These unprecedented findings on the causal relationship suggest the usefulness of enhancing the intention to interchange with citizens and those cultures in neighboring countries.
