Abstract
This study aims to comprehensively analyze instructional activities that promote learner engagement in an asynchronous Japanese composition course at a cyber university. To achieve this, data were collected through a combination of questionnaire surveys, open-ended responses, and analysis of Learning Management System (LMS) log data, focusing on cognitive, affective, behavioral, and social dimensions of engagement. The results revealed that activities such as writing quizzes, review exercises, and kanji practice, which integrated knowledge confirmation, application, and reflection processes, were particularly effective in deepening learners’ understanding and encouraging sustained participation. Additionally, the variety of class activities and the instructor’s approachable communication style were found to positively contribute to maintaining learners’ affective engagement, such as motivation and satisfaction. While social engagement was partially supported through active use of discussion boards, variations in the sense of connectedness among learners indicated the necessity of flexible and optional interaction designs. Furthermore, LMS log data analysis demonstrated high attendance and assignment submission rates overall, suggesting the importance of providing early interventions and self-monitoring opportunities to support continuous learning. These findings highlight that even in non-face-to-face learning environments, diverse instructional activities combined with structured support systems can effectively enhance learner engagement, offering practical insights for improving the quality of online Japanese language education.
