Abstract

This study analyzes travel writings about Korea by Japanese Writers in the 1960s. Following Japan’s liberalization of overseas travel in 1964 and the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and Korea in 1965, visits by writers from both countries increased. Focusing on three writers-Katsue Yuasa, Taiko Hirabayashi, and Kazue Morisaki-who had deep connections to colonial Korea, this study compares their travel experiences and narratives from the 1960s to explore the possibilities of postcolonial encounters. Yuasa, as a “second-generation colonialist,” strongly reveals a gaze filled with nostalgia for colonial Korea. Hirabayashi viewed Korea as a close “relative” of Japan and, by identifying Korea with Japan, failed to regard it as a distinct other. Although both writers were often referred to as “pro-Korean,” their travelogues commonly exhibit nostalgia for the colonial era, and a perspective that equates Korea with Japan-indicating a distance from postcolonial thought. On the other hand, Morisaki’s travels illustrate a process of constructing her own identity-her “face”-through reflections on her position as a “second-generation colonial subject” and through encounters with Korea as the Other, thereby shaping a self that oscillates between Korea and Japan. By continuing an inner dialogue with Korea/Choson grounded in guilt and affection, she moves beyond a nostalgic, retrospective visit and presents the possibility of a postcolonial encounter. In conclusion, the Korean travel writings of Japanese authors in the 1960s go beyond personal narratives; they serve as texts that reveal the intersections of postwar Japanese memories and perceptions of colonialism, as well as the possibilities for postcolonial encounters.
