Abstract
This study analyzed learners’ perceptions of Gather Town classes in comparison with face-to-face instruction to identify differences in interaction patterns and to derive pedagogical implications for instructional design. The findings indicate that the characteristics of virtual environments enabled the provision of learning-appropriate spaces and simulated experiences that are difficult to implement in face-to-face classes. In particular, the flexibility of spatial configuration allowed instructors to design diverse learning activities, while learners’ movement within these spaces increased interest and promoted active participation through an appropriate level of constraint. This feature emerged as a key advantage of metaverse-based classes. In addition, avatar-mediated interaction played an important role in shaping learners’ experiences. For learners seeking closer peer interaction, avatar use reduced feelings of shyness and narrowed psychological distance, whereas for those who felt burdened by face-to-face interaction, it provided a comfortable sense of distance. However, several limitations were also identified, including difficulties in conveying handwritten content and subtle nonverbal cues, as well as technical issues such as internet instability and audio latency. Moreover, because metaverse-based classes involve higher levels of interaction than conventional video-conferencing classes, learners need to be informed in advance of the requirement to participate through voice communication in an appropriate environment. Overall, the findings underscore the importance of interaction design that reflects the unique spatial characteristics of metaverse-based learning environments and accommodates diverse learner preferences.
