Abstract
As learner-centered education gains increasing emphasis, interest is growing in environments that promote active participation and interaction. Metaverse platforms, with their immersive and interactive characteristics, have emerged as promising digital learning spaces. This study aimed to empirically examine the effects of a learner-centered metaverse learning environment-previously developed and validated through design-based research-on learners’ perceived interaction and learning achievement. The participants were 63 undergraduate students from a four-year university in the Seoul metropolitan area, divided into two groups: one utilizing a general metaverse learning space (n=31) and the other using a learner-centered metaverse learning space (n=32). Over a four-week period, both groups engaged in the same instructional content. Pre- and post-surveys were administered to measure perceived interaction and learning achievement. Data were analyzed using one-way ANCOVA, controlling for pre-test scores as covariates. The results indicated that the group using the learner-centered metaverse environment reported significantly higher levels of perceived interaction and learning achievement than the group using the general metaverse environment. These findings suggest that structurally designed metaverse environments can enhance learners’ collaborative experiences and perceived learning outcomes. This study provides practical implications for the use of learner-centered metaverse learning environments in higher education, especially in the context of digital transformation in teaching and learning.
