Abstract
This paper focuses on the works of writers known as the Third Newcomers (Daisan no Shinjin) in postwar Japan, analyzing whether their literature contains a framework for envisioning post-postwar Japanese literature. Previous discussions on Third Newcomer literature have primarily revolved around critiques of their portrayal of petit-bourgeois everyday life. In contrast, this study approaches Third Newcomer literature from the perspective of exploring paradigms in post-postwar Japanese literature. Based on this research framework, the key arguments of this paper are as follows. First, it identifies a strategy of detour that runs through their early works. Second, it argues that this strategy of detour was not only a means of reflecting on the postwar condition as direct participants in the war but also a deliberate attempt to facilitate the normal evolution of post-postwar society.
