Abstract

This study offers a feminist reinterpretation of Im Kwon-taek’s canonical films—The Surrogate Woman, Come Come Come Upward, and Sopyonje—arguing that the recurring motif of the “aesthetics of silence” functions not merely as a stylistic choice, but as a structural principle of gendered oppression and a site of Orientalist reception. Engaging critically with this motif, the research positions silence as a cinematic code through which patriarchal ideology is not only sustained but aestheticized. By analyzing the visual contrast between natural and domestic spaces, the study exposes how female subjectivity is systematically erased through intersecting discourses of reproduction, religion, and artistic tradition. This erasure is rendered culturally legible through a veneer of sublimity, disguising violence as beauty. Challenging dominant interpretations that romanticize silence as spiritual transcendence or aesthetic restraint, this work reframes silence as an ideological apparatus that regulates female agency and maintains patriarchal authority. Rather than merely seeking to recover the silenced voices of women, the study reconceptualizes silence as a contested site of cinematic meaning and political resistance. Far from diminishing the artistic value of Im’s films, this analysis reveals the power dynamics embedded in his visual language, enabling a more nuanced understanding of his aesthetic complexity. Ultimately, this study contributes to feminist film criticism by rethinking the ethics of female representation and illuminating the politics of silence within the broader terrain of Korean cinematic modernity.
