나는 현대 심리 철학에서 의식에 대한 일차 이론과 고차 이론의 설명을 끌어들여 데카르트의 의식 이론이 고차 이론이라고 논증할 것이다. 첫째, 데카르트는 지각 또는 정념을 의식되는 것과 의식되지 않는 것으로 나누기 때문에 그의 의식 이론은 의식되지 않는 앎을 허용하지 않거나 잘 설명하지 못하는 일차 이론과 양립할 수 없다. 둘째, 데카르트의 의식 이론이 고차 이론이라는 것을 보여주는 강력한 증거는 인간을 제외한 동물의 지각 또는 정념이 의식되지 않는다는 그의 견해다. 셋째, 데카르트의 의식 이론은 의식에 대한 고차 이론들 가운데 고차 지각 이론이 아니라 고차 사유 이론의 성격을 지닌다.
Abstract
In this paper, I give a brief introduction of first-order and higher-order theories of consciousness in contemporary philosophy of mind and argue that Descartes’ theory of it is a higher-order theory. First of all, his theory of consciousness cannot be compatible with first-order theory which does not permit nonconscious awareness, because he makes a distinction between conscious perceptions or passions and nonconscious ones. Secondly, a powerful evidence showing that his theory of it is a higher-order theory is his views on animals’ nonconscious perceptions or passions. Lastly, his theory of it is a higher-order thought theory rather than a higher-order perception theory.
