Abstract
Can Descartes permit nonhuman animals any kind of self- consciousness? Based on his opinion that animals are machines without the soul, it is not probable that he answers “Yes.” But I challenge this common sense. First of all, I analyse his works, Meditations on First Philosophy and The Passions of the Soul and argue that he can permit animals nonconscious and bodily self-awareness. Secondly, I interpret his theory of consciousness as a kind of higher-order theory and argue that his higher-order theory of consciousness is consistent with the concept of animal’s nonconscious and bodily self-awareness. Lastly, I examine the challenges of the contemporary researches on animal self-consciousness and explain how Descartes responds to these challenges if he can. I argue that he can permit animals not theory of mind but nonconscious and social self-awareness as well as nonconscious and bodily self-awareness. I think that the contemporary researches on animal self-consciousness have to aim at the more detailed target of Descartes containing his view of nonconscious self-awareness.
