Abstract

This paper tries to reveal that Xunzi’s rectification of names is to secure the ethico-political truth, focusing on the three cognitive delusions(sanhuo 三惑) at Zhengming pien(正名篇) of Xunzi(荀子). To this end, the Xunzi’s concepts of the name and object are clarified, and based on this, the three cognitive delusions are explained. The existing interpretations on the three cognitive delusions do not interpret them using the concepts of name and object used by Xunzi, but also focus mainly on the arguments of the Gongsun Long(公孫龍), Hui Shih(惠施) and Neo-Mohists(後期墨家). In contrast to this, this paper deals with all the expressions made by Xunzi on the three cognitive delusions- all statements of sanhuo, the characterizations of sanhuo in terms of the concepts of name and object, and the remedial measures to prevent sanhuo. Through these attempts, it will be shown that Xunzi's rectification of names is not simply logical and linguistical, but also ethical and political.
