초록

Israel’s military superiority and security strategies have attracted the interest of both academics and practitioners in South Korea. However, to date there have been no rigorous analyses comparing the two countries’ security environments or examining the adaptability of the Israeli experience to the case of South Korea. This paper attempts to investigate such possibilities by applying discussion of deterrence theories with a specific focus on the issue of threat credibility. The analysis reveals that Israel and South Korea are situated in different security settings which cause the two countries’ policies of deterrence to function differently. Despite conventional beliefs, the distinctive features of the Israeli security environment and security strategies make them inappropriate for application to the case of South Korea.
