비형식 논리학의 논증에 대한 브라우워적 이해

필자는 이 논문에서 연역도 귀납도 아닌 논증에 대한 탐구가 비형식 논리학 본연의 주제이어야 함을 전제로, 추정(presumption)에 의거한 논증이 비형식 논리학의 대표적인 논증일 수 있다고 주장한다. 이를 위해 우선, 비형식 논리 개념을 배중률에 대한 브라우워의 비판에 비추어 이해할 것이다. 그 이해를 토대로 둘째, 타당성 또는 강함(약함)과는 다른 성질을 갖는 뒷받침 관계를 제안할 것이다. 끝으로, 최선의 설명에로의 추론이 그러한 뒷받침 관계의 논증으로서 유력한 후보일 수 있는지를 살펴볼 것이다.
Abstract
In this paper I offer an understanding of the concept of argument in the informal logic along the lines of Brouwerian intuitionism. First, I critically examined the concept of ‘informality’ by considering the Brouwer’s criticism of the principle of excluded middle. Second, based on it, I claim that presumptive argument is the third kind of inference which is neither deduction nor induction. Finally, I show that we are justified in taking the inference to the best explanation as a special case of presumptive argument.
