현대유학에서 ‘극기복례(克己復禮)’ 해석 논쟁과 그 의미 ―하병체와 두유명의 논쟁을 중심으로

본 논문은 1990년대 초반 중화권에서 전개된 ‘극기복례(克己復禮)’ 해석 논쟁을 소개하고, 그 의미를 살피려는 시도이다. 이 논쟁은 역사학자 하병체(何炳棣)가 현대신유가 진영에 속하는 두유명(杜維明)의 극기복례 해석을 비판하면서 촉발되었다. 두유명은 수신(修身)과 자아완성의 각도에서 공자의 극기 개념을 이해한다. 반면에 하병체는 주체의 억압이나 통제의 의미가 농후한 금욕주의의 맥락에서 극기를 해석하고, 또한 복례 역시 전장제도로서의 주례(周禮) 회복이 핵심이라고 판단한다. 하병체의 비판에 대해 유술선(劉述先)이 두유명을 옹호하며 반론을 펼쳤으며, 훗날 두유명이 자신의 관점을 정리한 저술을 출간함으로써 논쟁은 일단락되었다. 무엇보다 이 논쟁은 『논어』의 훈고학적 해석 문제를 넘어서 있다. 다시 말해, 유학의 핵심인 인(仁)과 예(禮)의 의미 및 이와 관련된 연구방법론을 둘러싸고 역사학자와 철학자의 시각이 충돌하고 있다. 이는 실증주의 방법론과 해석학적 방법론의 충돌을 함축하는데, 특히 ‘홍콩대만 현대신유가’ 노선이 중시하는 창조적 해석학 방법론의 정당성 문제와 관련된다는 점에서 중요한 학술적 의미를 갖는다. 본 논문은 하병체의 비판에 대한 두유명과 유술선의 대응을 검토함으로써, 현대신유가 진영의 유학 이해와 연구방법론에 담긴 함축을 살피고, 이를 통해 최근 중화권에서 대두하고 있는 유가인학(儒家仁學) 연구의 배경과 맥락에 접근하는 실마리로 삼고자 한다.
Abstract
This paper aims to organize the development process of the debate on Kejifuli(克己復禮) in the 1990s and examine its philosophical meaning. The debate was sparked by historian He Bingdi(何炳棣) criticizing the interpretation of Contemporary Neo-Confucianist Tu Weiming(杜維明) on Kejifuli(克己復禮). Tu weiming explains Confucain kejifuli in terms of self-discipline and self-completion. On the other hand, He Bingdi understands keji(克己) in the context of asceticism, and believes that fuli(復禮) means the recovery of the ritual of Zhou Dynasty. Liu Shuxian(劉述先) refuted He Bingdi's criticism again in defense of Tu Weiming, and the debate ended when Tu Weiming published an article that summarized his perspective later. This debate is not just a difference in the Analects interpretation. In other words, it implies a conflict between historians and philosophers in the interpretation of scriptures, that is, a conflict between scientific methodology and hermeneutic methodology. In addition, this debate is connected with the problem of understanding and acceptance of creative interpretations put forward by Contemporary Neo-Confucianism. In this paper, I would like to examine the contents and meaning of Tu weiming's view of Kejifuli. And through this, I intend to make the foundation for studying the Confucian Doctrine of Ren(仁), which many scholars are paying attention today.
