Abstract

This paper points out that the theory of lack of transcendence that Confucian thought is only a secular ethics and there is no religious transcendent spirit in it, is presupposed behind the phenomenon of equating or mixing Confucianism with ‘Western humanism’. Based on this issue, the paper examines the concept of immanent transcendence, which is a key feature of Confucian humanism ethics, by focusing on contemporary Neo-Confucianism Junyi Tang, who put forward the criticism of a Western-centric perspective constantly and his humanistic spirit. Junyi Tang highlights the idealistic features of Confucian humanism by discussing the problem about the translation of ‘Humanism’; Furthermore, he stresses the distinct religious spirit and transcendental orientations of Confucian humanism by re-illuminating medieval culture and religious spirit. In addition, through the interpretation of Song and Ming Neo-Confucianism and Liangzhi(良知), Junyi Tang reveals the dynamism and identity of Confucian humanism's immanent transcendental ethics.
