이 글은 인간 영혼의 불사성 문제에 대한 라이프니츠의 논변에 초점을 맞춘다. 이 논변은 데카르트의 불사성 논변에 대한 비판과 그 대안이 담겨있다는 점에서 근대철학의 주요 쟁점들 가운데 하나라고 할 수 있다. 하지만 이 논변은 단순히 근대에 국한된 쟁점으로서가 아니라 르네상스시대는 물론 중세에까지 거슬러 올라가는, 시대를 초월하는 중요한 쟁점이라는 점에 주목해야 한다. 왜냐하면 라이프니츠는 영혼의 불사성을 입증하는 시도를 중세와 르네상스시대의 무신론적 철학자들에 대한 비판의 일환으로 간주하기 때문이다. 더욱이, 영혼의 불사성 문제는 중세에서 신앙과 이성, 또는 종교와 철학의 관계를 두고 벌어진 논쟁과 밀접하게 연관되어 있다. 라이프니츠는 영혼의 불사성과 같은 그리스도교의 근본 교리들을 철학적으로 입증하려는 시도를 했을 뿐만 아니라 계시된 진리와 이성이 조화될 수 있다는 주장을 한다. 이런 측면에서 데카르트를 비판하는 라이프니츠의 영혼 불사성 논변을 통해 우리는 중세철학과 근대철학에 놓인 연속성을 추적할 수 있다
Abstract
This paper aims to deal with Leibniz’s argument on the problem of the immortality of the soul. This argument was one of major issues in early modern philosophy in that it contained his own position as well as his critique of Descartes’s argument of the immortality. Leibniz’s argument is also historically important since he considers his attempt to prove the immortality as a part of critique of atheism in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Futhermore, the problem of the immortality of the soul is closely linked with the controversy over the relation between faith and reason, or religion and philosophy in the Middle Ages. Leibniz tries to hold that revealed truth could be reconciled with reason as well as prove philosophically the Christian doctrines such as the immortality of the soul. This leads us to maintain that Leibniz’s argument is largely continuous with the mainstream of medieval thought.
