샌델은 향상 기술에 내재되어 있는 ‘정복을 위한 충동’은 인간의 능력이나 성취가 ‘선물’로 주어졌다는 인식을 파괴할 수 있으며, 이것은 겸손ㆍ책임ㆍ연대라는 인간 삶에서 중요한 가치를 훼손한다는 ‘선물 논증’을 제시한다. 나는 이 선물 논증이 상당히 설득력이 있다고 생각하는데, 향상과 관련된 여러 국내 연구들이 이 논증을 제대로 이해하지 못하고 있음을 그간 두 편의 논문을 통해 역설했다. 이 논문 역시 다시 한번 샌델의 논증을 어떻게 오해하고 있는지 밝혀, 선물 논증의 본뜻을 올바로 이해하도록 하려고 한다. 우선 2절에서 샌델의 논증은 보수주의로 분류될 수 있지만 다른 보수주의자들과 그 성격이 다름을 강조한다. 그리고 3절에서는 샌델이 강조한 ‘선물’의 의미가 무엇인지 밝힌다. 그는 ‘정복하려는 충동’과 ‘주어진 선물로 인정하는 것’의 차이를 강조하는데, 자연을 정복하려는 충동은 겸손과 책임과 연대와 같은 인간의 주요한 미덕에 나쁜 영향을 끼치기 때문이다. 나는 이것을 결과주의적 논증으로 해석하는데 4절에서는 그것을 자세하게 설명하겠다. 5절에서는 샌델 논증을 올바로 이해하지 못하는 사례로 심지원 교수의 논문들을 분석한다. 나는 결론으로 샌델의 선물 논증이 미래의 향상 기술에뿐만 아니라 현재의 교육 문제에도 적용됨을 보인다.
Abstract
Sandel suggests that the “drive to conquest” inherent in enhancement technology can destroy the perception that human ability or achievement is given as a “gift” and undermines the important values of hubris, responsibility, and solidarity in human life. I think this gift argument is quite convincing, and I have emphasized in two papers that several Korean studies related to improvement do not properly understand this argument. This paper also attempts to clarify how Sandel's argument is misunderstood once again to properly understand the true meaning of the gift argument. First of all, in Section 2, Sandel's argument can be classified as conservative, but I emphasize that it is different from other conservatives. And in Section 3, I reveal what Sandel intends as the 'gift'. He emphasizes the difference between “the drive to conquer” and “the appreciation of giftedness”, because the drive to conquer the nature adversely affects the important values of humankind such as humility, responsibility, and solidarity. I interpret this as a consequentialist argument, which I will explain in detail in Section 4. Section 5 analyzes Professor Shim Ji-won's papers as an example of not properly understanding the Sandel’s argument. I conclude that Sandel's gift argument applies not only to future enhancement techniques but also to current educational problems.
