아리스토텔레스의 필리아 개념이 가진 성품의 덕으로서의 특성과 원리를 해명하는 데 목적이 있다. 첫째, 필리아의 덕의 가능성에 대해 검토하고, 성품의 덕의 특징을 필리아에 적용하여 필리아의 특성을 살펴보고자 한다. 먼저 필리아가 덕의 일종 또는 덕을 수반하는 것이라는 아리스토텔레스의 논의를 통해 필리아가 다양한 덕들 중 하나이거나 최소한 덕을 포함한다는 것을 해명한다. 다음으로 성품의 덕의 일반적 특징을 필리아에 적용하여 성품의 덕의 특성을 본질적 특성(A)과 실천적 특성(B)으로 구분한다. 한편으로 ‘덕의 본질적 특성’(A)이란 명칭은 덕이 ‘품성상태’이며 ‘기능’이라는 사실과 연관된다. 필리아도 품성상태라 불리며 서로에게 즐거움과 이익과 좋음을 줄 수 있다. 다른 한편으로 ‘덕의 실천적 특성’(B)은 덕이 ‘습관’ 또는 ‘체화’ethos 되어야 하며 ‘중용’meson을 지켜야 한다는 사실과 연관된다. 필리아는 너무 지나치지도 너무 모자라지도 않는 것이 중요하다. 우리는 모든 상황에서 어떻게 사랑하는 것이 적절한 것인지를 합리적으로 숙고하고 선택해야 한다. 둘째, 성품의 덕으로서의 필리아의 공통 조건들과 완전한 필리아의 원리들을 분석한다. 먼저 아리스토텔레스의 필리아에 공통적인 세 가지 조건들, 즉 ‘상호성’의 조건, ‘유사성’의 조건, ‘인지성’의 조건을 도출하였다. 다음으로 아리스토텔레스의 완전한 필리아는 제1필리아 또는 덕에 따른 필리아라 불리는데 다섯 가지 원리들을 가진다. 그것들은 ‘유사성’의 원리, ‘희구성’의 원리, ‘지속성’의 원리, ‘희소성’의 원리, ‘신뢰성’의 원리이다.
Abstract
This paper aims to clarify the characteristics and principles of Aristotle’s concept of philia as a virtue of character. First, the possibility of philia being a virtue is examined, and the characteristics of philia are examined by applying the characteristics of the virtues of character to philia. Above all, through Aristotle’s discussion that philia is a certain virtue or a kind of virtue, or accompanied by virtue, it is said that philia is one of various virtues or at least what includes virtue. Next, the general characteristics of the virtues of character were analyzed by applying them to philia. Characteristics of virtue of character can be divided into essential characteristics (A) and practical characteristics (B). On the one hand, the ‘essential characteristics of virtue’ (A) is related to the fact that virtue is a ‘state of character’ (hexis) and a ‘function’. Philia is also called a state of character, and we can give pleasure, utility, and goodness to each other. On the other hand, the ‘practical character of virtue’ (B) is related to the fact that virtue must be ‘habit’ or ‘embodied’ ethos and must adhere to the ‘moderate’ (meson). It is important that philia is neither too much nor too little. We must deliberate and rationally choose how to love is appropriate in all circumstances. Second, the main principles of philia as a virtue of character and complete philia are analyzed. Above all, three principles common to Aristotle’s philia, namely ‘reciprocity’, ‘similarity’, and ‘awareness’, were derived. Next, Aristotle’s perfect philia is called the first philia or the philia according to virtue, and it has subdivided five characteristics. They are ‘similarity’, ‘good wish’, ‘persistency’, ‘rarity’, and ‘reliability’.
