유전 공학의 향상 기술은 인간의 근육이나 키 등의 신체 능력이나 기억력 등의 인지 능력을 향상하는 목적으로도 쓰일 수 있기에 윤리적인 논쟁거리가 되고 있다. 샌델은 향상 기술에는 ‘정복을 위한 충동’이 내재되어 있고, 이것은 인간의 능력이나 성취가 선물로 주어졌다는 인식을 파괴할 수 있으며, 겸손･책임･연대라는 인간 삶에서 중요한 가치를 훼손한다는 이유로 반대한다. 이채리 교수는 「유전공학적 향상에 대한 샌델의 비판은 옳은가?」라는 논문에서 샌델의 논증을 “유전 공학적 향상은 ‘선물로 받음’을 인정하는 태도에 어긋나므로 비도덕적이다.”(G1)와 “유전 공학이 현실화되면 인간의 주요한 미덕인 겸손, 책임, 연대성이 변형된다.”(G2)라는 두 주장으로 요약하고, 그런 다음에 각 주장을 비판한다. 나는 이 교수의 논문이 샌델의 논증을 어떻게 오해하고 있는지 밝혀, 선물 논증의 본뜻을 제대로 알리려고 한다.
Abstract
The enhancement techniques in genetic engineering have aroused ethical controversies, because they can also be used to improve the physical abilities such as human muscles and height, and the cognitive abilities such as memory. Sandel stands against the use of those techniques because he believes that they have a ‘drive to conquest', which can destroy the perception that human ability or achievement has been given as a gift, and that they undermine the important values of humankind such as hubris, responsibility and solidarity. In “Is Right M. Sandel's criticism of Genetic Enhancement?”, Professor Lee Chaelee has summarized Sandel’s argument as “genetic enhancement is immoral because it is against the attitude of the appreciation of giftedness.”(G1) and “when genetic engineering is realized, virtue of humility, responsibility, and solidarity is transformed”, and then criticised each claim. I try to make clear that this professor's paper is misrepresenting Sandel's gift argument and tell the truth of his argument.
