본 논문에서는 트랜스휴머니즘의 주장을 소개하는 동시에 과학기술을 통한 인간 ‘향상’에 반대하는 프랜시스 후쿠야마와 마이클 샌델의 주장을 검토한다. 먼저 기술 발전의 기하급수성과 함께 현재 연구 개발되고 있는 첨단 과학기술들의 성격을 고려할 때, 트랜스휴머니즘이 ‘세상에서 가장 위험한 생각’일 수 있다는 후쿠야마의 진단이 일면 시의적절한 것임을 논증한다. 그러나 다른 한편으로 인간향상 일반에 반대하는 후쿠야마나 샌델의 논증은 그 세련된 수사와는 별개로 인간향상의 도덕적 문제를 지적하는 논증으로는 대단히 취약한 반론임을 밝힌다. 이들 논증들은 향상 기술의 적용에서 우리가 숙고해야 할 여러 문제들을 제기하고는 있지만, 향상 기술을 금지할 결정적 이유를 제시하는 데에는 실패한다. 마지막으로, 샌델의 ‘선물(giftedness)’ 논증을 우호적으로 독해할 수 있는 한 가지 방안을 제안한다. 이러한 독해에 따르면, 샌델은 향상 기술 자체에 내재하는 어떤 도덕적 난점을 지적하고자 하는 것이 아니라, 향상을 추구하는 삶의 방식을 추동하고 있는 개인의 자율성 및 권리 개념에 입각한 시장 자유주의 혹은 자본주의적 삶의 태도에 대한 반성적 숙고를 촉구하고 있는 것이다.
Abstract
This paper critically examines the anti-transhumanist arguments put forward by Francis Fukuyama and Michael Sandel. I first tried to provide the reasons for thinking that transhumanism, which encourages human enhancement using cutting-edge scientific technology, may turn out to be one of the most dangerous ideas in the world, as suggested by Fukuyama. However, I argue that their argument, even though rhetorically very persuading, fails to provide a conclusive reason to disapprove human ‘enhancement’ in general on ethical grounds. In particular, I put Sandel’s argument from ‘giftedness’ under a very careful examination to show this. On the other hand, I think that, even though Sandel’s argument is not so convincing as an argument against human enhancement per se, there is a way of interpreting it in a benevolent way. On this interpretation, he is trying to suggest that there lies very problematic liberalist conception of individual autonomy and right under our way of life seeking for human enhancement, to which he has ultimately been raising an objection.
