Abstract
The application of sustainable development is spreading worldwide, but without clarification of its meaning. The discussions on sustainable development have focused on economic, environmental, and social aspects. However, given the recent criticism that the theoretical foundation of the triple bottom line model is not clear, studies are required to clarify the meaning by using a new approach. Thus, this study aims to examine the constructs (sustainability and development) and attributes (continuity, quantitative change, and qualitative change) of sustainable development and compare their meaning with those of sustainability and sustainable growth, to categorize common and different attributes. In the concept of sustainable development, the continuity was found to mean ‘balance of environment and development’, and quantitative and qualitative change for ‘production and consumption of resources’ and ‘equity of resource use’, respectively. This illustrates that sustainable development focuses on the fair use of resources beyond quantitative increases and decreases in the production and consumption of resources, and aims to reach a balanced state between the demand for human welfare and ecosystem capacity.
