Abstract

Sustainable development has been attracting attention from various perspectives over the past 50 years, however many problems have emerged, and also various alternative improvement ways have been presented. In that poverty, inequality and environmental destruction continue, research interest in sustainable development still matters. This study is to explore the limitations of sustainable development and to provide the directions of alternative sustainability. Based on the historical consideration of sustainable development, this study examined the limitations of sustainable development in terms of cognitive limitations, limitations of synchrony, and pursuit of environmental modernization. Based on these limitations, this study approached alternative sustainability through the orientation, direction and practice. In order to pursue alternative sustainability, this study proposed the combination of antiessentialism, anti-utilitarianism, and post-development as the orientation of alternative development. In the direction of alternative development, it suggested overcoming the exploratory capitalism, developing local-led, and solving social inequality. And as a practical performance of alternative development, the change to the alternative economy, the change to the society of commons, and the emphasis of social resilience were presented.
