초록
Optimists of transparency argue revealing information of government activities enhances citizen trust in government. Notwithstanding a clear intuition, the impact of transparency on trust seems divergent. This study attempts to reconcile the conflicting views by exploring how transparency affects trust in various institutions of government, including the central government, the congress, the courts, the military, and the police. Using the World Values Survey, the Rule of Law Index, and the Global Competitiveness Index, this study employs a multilevel regression analysis. The results show that trust has a positive influence on the courts, military, and police. On the contrary, it has a negative influence on the central government and parliament. The findings of this study suggest that transparency yields unequivocal influences on trust in government, depending on the specific branch of government.
