Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between politics and religion in Venezuela, with a specific focus on the ties between the Maduro administration and the Catholic Church. In particular, it analyzes the relationship between the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference, which represents the Catholic Church in Venezuela, and the Maduro government. Given the significant role of the Holy See on the international stage as a representative of the Catholic Church, the paper also includes a complementary analysis of its relations with the Maduro regime. The study explores President Nicolás Maduro’s views on religion and identifies the ideological characteristics of his administration, which claims to be the political and ideological successor of Hugo Chávez. Furthermore, it analyzes the actions and positions of the Episcopal Conference during Venezuela’s political and economic crisis-especially in the context of protests against human rights violations, democratic backsliding, elections, and authoritarian governance. In conclusion, the relationship between the Maduro administration and the Catholic Church can largely be characterized by confrontation and conflict.
