Abstract
Paris was awarded many labels in the nineteenth century. And literature has played a role in the formation of various images of Paris. In this writing, we will see Paris represented in the “Sentimental Education” of Flaubert. “Sentimental Education” shows the social topography of pre-Haussmannian Paris. First, the home of Dambreuse which symbolizes money and power is located on rue d'Anjou in the 8th arrondissement. It is a home of the new ruling class, that is to say a place of the upper bourgeoisie. And then the home of Arnoux is in the 2nd district. It is a bohemian place where you can see petty bourgeois. Then Rosanette's house forms a neutral space where the men of these two worlds frequent each other. It is located in the 9th arrondissement. The Latin Quarter, where the persons spend a moment of life, symbolizes the beginning of life. This is where Frédéric starts his social life. Subsequently, the novel draws a cross movement between the left bank and the right bank. But the majority of the scenes take place on the right bank, especially west of the center of the city. And this universe of the novel is defined by a double relation of opposition, on the one hand to the great aristocracy and on the other hand to the lower classes. Consequently, the living Paris of “Sentimental Education” is a bourgeois Paris. At this Paris, Frédéric sees a city of pleasure, a city of ambition, a city of revolution and a city of Madame Arnoux. In the city of pleasure he is chilled by tumultuous gaiety, and feels disenchantment at the thought of Madame Arnoux. In the city of ambition, for Madame Arnoux, he chooses the path where he can not realize his ambition. In the city of revolution, he escapes from the revolutionary scene by remaining a spectator. And in the city of Madame Arnoux, he feels pain without having obtained the love of Madame Arnoux. That is to say, it undergoes failures on any occasion. The novel shows that Paris is a city of failure. In a word, Flaubert gives us a new interpretation of Paris by refusing the myth of Paris formed of his time.
