본 연구의 목적은 대학 교양교육에서 외국어 교과목, 특히 제2외국어 교과목 운영 현황을 국내 주요 대학의 교양교육 과정을 중심으로 비교 분석하고, 대학의 교양교육에서 제2외국어 강좌의 효율적 운영 방법을 모색하고자, 수업 운영 및 행정적 제도의 두 가지 측면에서 체계적으로 개선하기 위한 방안을 제안하는데 있다. 특히, 대학 교양 외국어 교육과정의 평가(Language Program Evaluation) 및 운영이라는 거시적 시각에서 접근하여, 국내 주요 대학별 전체 교양 교육과정의 특성에 따라 상이한 외국어 교과 운영 과정의 현황을 비교해보면서, 상호 보완될 점을 찾고, 전체적으로 교양 외국어가 개선될 수 있는 방향을 모색하였다. 본 연구에서는 효율적 교양 외국어 교육과정 운영을 위한 체크리스트를 제안하였는데, 수준별 수업, 학기초/말 수요자 및 교수자 설문, 사이버 강의실 운영 및 플립트 러닝 적용, 강좌의 수요와 공급 균형, 원어민 강의 혹은 랩 수업 여부, 적절한 강의시수 및 강좌 정원, 표준화된 평가 지침 등이 그것이다. 본 연구를 기반으로 국내외 더 많은 대학의 사례 연구를 통하여 외국어 교과과정 제도 개선에 많은 부분 도움이 되길 기대할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to make an analysis of foreign language programs in Korean colleges and universities. As a result of rapid globalization within contemporary society and consequent need for study of foreign languages and cultures, the importance of foreign language requirements in universities and colleges are becoming increasingly emphasized. Foreign language education in Korea is administratively classified into two major categories—English and foreign languages other than English (Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, French, German, etc). Normally, for most Korean students, L2 (first foreign language) is English, which is acquired during K-12 education course prior to their entrance to universities/colleges. Compared to the College English Program, foreign languages lack basic educational system such as program evaluation, assessment, etc. The purpose of this research is to suggest a possible plan for more effectively and systematically developing, and improving the foreign language program in Korea by comparing and analyzing the program for foreign languages other than English at major universities in Korea. In our study, we suggest strategies of college L3 language program management which include developing placement test, oral diagnostic assessment, language program internal survey (beginning and exit survey program) and standardized large scale assessment. We also suggest the importance of communication and collaboration among program administrators (language department directors, coordinators and chairs) and leadership of administratively empowered individuals who have the authority and responsibility to encourage activities like evaluation.
