Abstract
Euripides’ Medea and Homer’s Iliad are not the ones told as stories of love by a conventional classification. Rather, they are usually taken as songs on dreadful destructions. But Medea and Helen both have pursued the meaning of their existence through reviewing what they have been doing with their love, or in the name of love. So the inquiry of their love could be an inquiry of their self-understanding. Medea is often identified as a typical drama-character of ultimate vengeance, but she has proved herself with series of conscious actions, including even self-destructive one. For some substantial discussion of this matter, we need to examine Medea’s agon-speech with Jason. Helen or the gift of Aphrodite, known as causa belli and prize for winner, starts to challenge certain image of herself in those “Helen scene.” Helen’s review on the wall(teichoskopia) and the agon with Aphrodite show her growing self-awareness. That’s their palinode. They both have travelled a lot. But in certain sense their love, so they themselves are captives.
