Abstract

This paper is to clarify the relationship and connotation between the abduction of women (or missing women) and the colonization movement (or military expeditions) of the Ancient Mediterranean region. In Archaic times, the Delphic Oracles, or the claim of preemptive rights, were the most customary medium of colonization in the ancient Mediterranean. In addition to this, in my opinion, declarations to regain missing or abducted women were the most frequent pretext for starting colonization and military expeditions. Io, Europe, Medea and Helen are mythical heroines who were known to be abducted or missing and thus caused war or colonial movements. Their countries took the most active part in sea trade, commercial activity and establishing colonies before the Classical Age. In the Classical Age, the Athenians, the dominant leaders of the rising ‘Sea Empire’, repeatedly brought up the story of those such as Io and Helen. In the tragedy Prometheus Bound, Io was described as a pioneer, establishing colonies for herself and her descendants abroad. Isocrates also used Helen’s abduction saga to justify the Trojan War, and further urge another military expedition against the Orient, expecting lucrative colonies. In short, the abduction of women was regarded as an attack on their countries and was used as a justification to declare war against the perpetrating nation; it was rhetorically and frequently used as the rationalization of war or as a pretext to launch a military expedition and establish colonies.
