Abstract
This paper aims for the analysis of Medea’s thymos(spiritedness) in Euripides’ Medea. I will focus on the monologue 1021-1080. My arguments are the followings. (i) The traditional line which considers Medea’s motive from the opposition between passion and reason, overlooks the aspect of ‘reasoning’ Medea. (ii) The late criticisms pay attention to the conflict between heroic Medea and motherly Medea. However, this line does not answer the problem, why and how Medea make a decision of infanticide. (iii) In relation to disputable issues in the monologue 1021-1080, I will propose a new alternative: the hypothesis of systematic ambiguity. According this hypothesis, Euripides intended to open a ambiguous reading of the monologue, particularly 1077-1080. (iv) Through his focusing on a amalgamation of cruel vengeance and instrumental reasoning, Euripides seems to disclose a danger of the transformed traditional hero: Medea’s thymos.
