Abstract

According to Hume’s moral sentimentalism, sympathy is an essential precursor to moral judgement. My aim in this paper is to shed some light on the pro-social aspect of moral emotion by advancing the idea that the emotions involved in approbation and disapprobation may have greater motivational force than the emotions associated with sympathy(empathy). I first of all examine whether sympathy is necessary for morality and show that sympathy is not a precondition for moral judgment. I argue that moral emotions brought about by approbation and disapprobation without sympathy constitute our moral judgment. Furthermore, I maintain that one can advance a sentimentalism based on such emotions as anger and guilt, while giving only marginal import to empathy. I show the pro-social function of moral emotion by focusing on collective emotion such as collective guilt and indignation. I reject Margaret Gilbert’s cognitive model of collective guilt and defend Jesse Prinz’s non-cognitive model. I call collective guilt and indignation in the non-cognitive model ‘reactive attitude’. I argue that the manifestations of these emotions are part of the given framework of human nature. They may vary with local conventions and customs.
