Abstract
The aim of this paper is to suggest an alternative to overcome the problems of Jonathan Haidt's social intuitionism by comparing Hume’s moral sentiment with Haidt’s moral intuition. Haidt argues that intuition prevails in moral judgment, that reasoning is relatively incompetent, and that intuition and emotion are closely related. According to Haidt, this intuition is expressed as a ‘moral module’ based on ‘preparedness’, the product of evolution. In other words, our moral intuition and motive came from some intuition prepared by the development of human mind by evolution, and moral judgment is the product of quick and automatic intuition, and based on this, it is relatively slow, conscious moral reasoning. The first difficulty of Haidt's social intuitionism is the problem of explaining the close relationship between moral intuition and emotion. Haidt argues that moral intuition develops in an interdependent relation of virtue as a congenital moral module and social composition, but the relationship between virtue and innate moral modules is still unclear. The second problem of Haidt's social intuitionism is that intuition can be defective or wrong, but it does not provide an answer for how to judge the goodness or the badness of certain intuitions. In this paper, I find the answer in Hume's sympathy theory.
