의식적 경험은 심리철학에서 시각 청각 후각과 관련된 지각 경험과 신체 감각과 관련된 비지각적 경험으로 구분되어 왔다. 이 논문은 통증 경험이 시각 경험처럼 지각 경험에 속하는지, 아니면 비지각적 경험인지를 검토하는 것이다. 이는 경험의 내용이 대상이라는 객관적인 측면을 통해 그 경험 속성이 설명되는지, 아니면 주관적인 내성의 측면을 통해 설명되는지의 여부에 따른다. 그러나 주관적 측면만을 강조하게 되면, 환상통이나 연관통, 그리고 의학적인 처치에 따른 통증 경험의 변화 등 실제적인 사례들을 구체적으로 설명하지 못하므로, 통증 경험이 과연 비지각적 경험인지는 논란이 되어왔다. 이 논문에서 필자는 드레츠키 방식의 표상주의 설명이 통증 경험의 다양성을 상대적으로 잘 설명할 수 있다는 점, 그리고 실제 통증 경험이 대상에로 부여된다는 언어 사용의 측면과도 양립가능하다는 점, 그리고 실험철학의 연구가 통증 경험의 대상적 측면을 부각시킨다고 평가한다. 그러나, 통증 경험의 특징이 경험의 주관적 측면에 크게 의존하는 만큼, 설명들에서도 통증 경험의 대상의 측면을 충분하게 설명하기는 어렵다.
Abstract
Conscious experiences are typically divided into two categories: perceptual experience (e.g. seeing red) and non-perceptual experience (e.g., body sensations). The purpose of this paper is to examine whether pain is a kind of perceptual or non-perceptual experience. If pain is a perceptual experience, the property of the experience is characterized mainly by objective aspects such as bodies. Pain as non-perceptual experience is characterized by its introspective qualities. Traditional, introspective characterization of pain cannot explain pathological cases such as phantom limb, and referred pain. Fred Dretske’s representational account of pain experience reconcile the subject and objective aspect of pain as well as explain pathological cases. Ordinary notion of pain also indicates the objective aspect of pain as the essential part of pain experience. However, the question as to how the subjective aspect of pain can be associated with the objective aspect remains as a matter to be discussed further.
