Abstract
The aim of this paper is to defend the externalist view of the nature of pain, more precisely, the representationalist theory of the nature of pain. Traditionally, the nature of pain has been understood in terms of its phenomenological properties such as feeling certain qualia distinctive of pain experiences. The rationale for this internalistic view of pain is that feeling pain is an essentially subjective and private experience, which requires a first-person approach. During the past several decades, however, externalist views of pain gained acceptance by philosophers with naturalistic world views. According to these views—perceptualism and representationalism—feeling pain is primarily an experience of external conditions, especially, the damage of the physical body. In particular, according to one of the most radical version of externalism, i.e., the representationalist view of pain, the phenomenological properties of pain can also be explained in terms of the representational content of pain experiences. I will argue for this view by responding to the objections raised by the advocates of internalism.
