Abstract

In Fragment 2, Parmenides says that there are two ways for thinking. One is the way that it is and that it is not possible not to be, and the other is the way that it is not and that it is necessary not to be. However, these two ways have been called the way that it is and the way that it is not, without proper explications of the existence of the modal parts. This paper suggests that what Parmenides did in his poem was to set up the Greek word einai (to be) as having a context-independent meaning, and that the modal parts were the device to show that he was doing just that. With this understanding, the first way turns out to be the way of being that is free of non-being, and the second way to be the way of non-being that is free of being. The status of the way of Doxa, then, becomes clear as the way that combines being and non-being, and the confusions about how many ways there are in Parmenides’ poem and about which part of his poem belongs to which way can be explained away.
