Abstract
mathematical, logical and ontological dimensions. The final conclusion from the critic is that the Forms which are in and for themselves are not, even if they are, unknowable, even though they are knowable difficult to convince in saying because the substance is not in us. Therefore the most difficult of the whole dialogue is that they are not. In transition to the last half of the dialogue Plato attempts to solve the problem on the base of truth. Due to this the very last conclusion of the dialogue is that everything in every way is and is not. While the historical Parmenides forces the alternative “is or is not” Plato is talking about the coexistence of “is and is not”. The first thesis in the last half of the dialogue which is deciding to the transition to Neoplatonism is “if it is one”. It is Plato’s position that if it is one that which is one is not the predicate “one” and all that the predicate “one” implicates. But the Neoplatonism which identifies the One in Parmenides with the Good in the Republic reads the first thesis as “if the One is” and interprets that the One transcends all beings which it contains in itself. But while Plato says that the one is not because it is not in time which is the condition for the existence the Neoplatonist Proclus asserts that the One is not because it is God which transcends not only the time but also the first substance.
