파르메니데스의 단편에는 네 가지 종류의 사유가 있다. 첫째는 길에 관한 메타적인 사유하기이며, 둘째는 인간 사유가 따라야 할 원리(is or is not)를 제시하는 사유이며, 셋째는 인간 사유가 지켜야 하는 사유의 원리를 지키지 않고 있다와 있지 않다를 혼용하는 일반적인 사람들의 사유이며, 넷째는 ‘존재하거나 존재하지 않는다’는 원리 중에서 존재를 선택했을 때 진행되는 사유이다. 논리적 순서로 보면 방법에 관해 메타적으로 언급하는 첫 번째 사유가 가장 선행하며, 그 다음으로 인간의 사유가 지켜야 하는 원리를 제시하는 두 번째 사유이며, 다음으로 있음(~임)을 선택했을 때 진행되는 네 번째 사유가 최후에 등장하게 된다. 세 번째 사유는 인간 사유가 지켜야 하는 원리를 지키지 않기 때문에 비판받는다. 일반적으로 파르메니데스는 존재론의 창시자로서 높이 평가되고 있지만 이보다 더 큰 공헌은 인간이 사유를 진행하는데 등장할 수 있는 사유의 틀이 두 가지(있음, 있지 않음)가 있으며 양자의 관계가 배타적이라는 점을 최초로 규명했다는 데서 찾을 수 있다.
Abstract
There are four kinds of thought in Parmenides’ fragments. The first is meta thought thinking about the way (hodos), i.e. methodological (meta + hodos) thought. The second is the thought thinking about the basic principle (is or is not, estin he‾ ouk estin) of thought. The third is the thought of undiscerning crowds in whose eyes the same thing and not the same both is and is not, and all things travel in opposite directions. The fourth is the thought which is inseparable from being, appearing only after choosing ‘is’ between ‘is’ and ‘is not’. In logical order of priority, the first is methodological thought, the second is the thinking about the thought principle (is or is not), and the last is ontological thought (fourth). The thought of undiscerning crowds (mortal), trespassing against the rule of thought, is criticized by Parmenides. Viewed in the light of the fourth thought, Parmenides is the progenitor of ontology. Viewing his philosophy from a different angle, e.g. the logical priority of four kinds of thought, ontology begins only after the first, methodological thought, and the second thinking about the thought principle. So it is more appropriate to call Parmenides the progenitor of methodology and the founder of the basic thought principle rather than the originator of ontology.
