Abstract

The purpose of the present study is to show that Friedrich Schlegel discovered the potential of a new literary representation from Plato's philosophy and form of dialogue and used it in his representative work “Conversation on Poetry". Plato's form of dialogue, which creates thoughts in the midst of the questions, was understood by Schlegel as the infinite essence of philosophy, which could only be recognized as an approximation to the truth. And this has been translated into a romantic literary representation which, apart from the function of literary communication, focuses on poetry's infinite self-reflection. In the course of this acceptance of Plato's philosophy in the literary horizon, it can be interpreted as the starting point for a new understanding of representation. In romantic poetics, narrative is a mode of expression, but an indirect mode, namely an allegory of depicting the unrepresentable. Plato's form of dialogue was welcomed by Schlegel as such a new narrative possibility.
