Abstract

This paper investigates the third proof of the superiority of the just life to the unjust life given by Plato’s Republic IX, which argues that only the just person, i.e. the philosopher, enjoys the kind of pleasure which is true and pure and thus he is happier than the unjust(583b-588a). In particular, this paper examines (a) what kind of pleasure the pure pleasure of the philosopher is and (b) why he is superior to the unjust person because of his enjoyment of this kind of pleasure. For this examination, first, by inquiring into 583b-584, I claim that pleasure is distinguished from a sort of calm of the soul, i.e. the cessation of pain, and that pleasure is bisected into pure pleasure and relief from, i.e. the relief from pain. I then scrutinize the so-called topological analogy(584c-585a) and argue that, although some sorts of pure pleasure are neither preceded nor followed by pain, being neither preceded nor followed by pain is not a definitive feature of pure pleasure. I finally investigate(585a-588a) and claim that the pleasure of the philosopher is pure in the sense that it is not followed by necessary pain, which means that this pleasure consists in an entire satisfaction of its related desire. To prove this claim, I show that every kind of pleasure the philosopher enjoys while doing philosophy and ruling the ideal-city is not followed by necessary pain. Therefore, I conclude that the philosopher who mainly enjoys pure kinds of pleasure is happier than other kinds of people because he can best meet a basic human need, i.e. satisfaction of one’s overall desire.
