Abstract

In his third argument in Republic Ⅸ 583b-588a Plato attempts to show that the just person's life is the most pleasant one, thus demonstrating the utmost happiness of the just person. He referred to this argument as "the greatest and most decisive of the overthrows", and yet several scholars have considered his way of argument to be "so alien to our ways of thought as to be barely comprehensible." This argument, however, has great significance in his moral philosophy, as he said. He makes an analysis of the nature of pleasure, not in terms of subjective feelings but with respect to the values of activities, since the state of being varies according to the activity we are pursuing. Corporal pleasures may temporarily satisfy our desires or relieve pains. For this reason we put values on the pleasure-seeking activities. But those addicted to such activities may be compared to those who moved from 'the below' to 'the middle' and believed themselves to be on 'the above'. Most of the sensual pleasures, being correlative with pains, cannot be pure pleasures, but shadow-painting, for they are often either exaggerated or reduced through comparison or contrast. Plato asserts that some activities, not correlative with pains but satisfying human being essentially, must accompany pure and true pleasures. He believed intelligent activity can afford to give such pleasure, because man can undergo mental transformation through intelligent activity and, liberated from the fleshly desires, find genuine satisfaction in such activity. For Plato, reason does not take merely calculating and reasoning function, but also exerts influence on our affections and desires. Reason, not by restraining or controlling the desires of the other parts of psyche but by emotional transformation, conducts desires into good channels and enables each part of psyche to enjoy its own satisfaction. In the third argument, Plato believed, he can show concretely that only when our psyche is in good health, we can live the happiest life. This is the reason he described the argument as "the greatest and most decisive."
