이 논문은 정치권력과 철학이 결합할 때에만 인류가 행복한 삶을 살 수 있다는 플라톤의 철인정치론의 의미를 고찰하고자 하는 글이다. 필자는 먼저 철학자는 완전한 인식을 소유하고 있는 ‘지자(智者)’가 아니라 진리를 추구하는 자임을 밝혔다.『국가』편에서 이상적인 철학자에 대한 묘사에 근거해서 철인치자가 궁극적 진리에 대한 완전한 지식을 소유하고 있어야만 철인정치론의 근거가 마련된다고 보는 것은 지나친 해석이다. 기본적으로 철학자는 비철학자와 달리 인식과 의견을 구분할 수 있기 때문에 통치할 자격이 주어지는 것이다. 더 나아가 진리를 사랑하는 철학자는 세속적인 욕망을 추구하지 않을 것이라는 그의 주장의 의미를 살펴보았다. 그리고 ‘배의 비유’에서 두 가지 측면을 주목하였다. 첫째로, 민주정에 대한 플라톤 비판의 핵심은 당시의 직접민주주의가 나라에 필요한 전문적 식견을 지니고 있는 인물들이 그에 적합한 역할을 수행하기 힘든 구조라는 점에 있다. 둘째로, 철인치자에게 요구되는 전문성은『카르미데스』와『에우티데모스』편에서 모색되었던 ‘총괄적인 지식’과 같은 것이 아니다. 그는 좋음의 이데아에 대한 인식에 근거해 적도와 균형을 통해 좋음을 구현하고자 하는 자이다. 또한 철학자는 단지 양육과 교육의 빚을 갚으라는 요구 때문에 정치 현실에 참여하는 것이 아니라 궁극적으로 좋음의 구현을 목표로 한다는 점을 지적했다. 그의 철인정치론은 지성이 지배하는 공동체를 실현하기 위한 하나의 방도로서 제시된 것이다.
Abstract
This paper is an attempt to consider Plato's argument for philosopher-kingship, that means human happiness can be possible only when political power combines with philosophy. First I tried to prove the philosopher not a knower who attains the full knowledge, but a man who seeks truth. It is an exaggeration to say, based on the description of "the ideal philosopher" in Republic, that philosopher-kingship can be a valid theory only when the philosopher-ruler should own the full knowledge of the ultimate truth. Basically the philosopher, unlike the non-philosopher, can tell knowledge from belief, so as to be qualified to rule. Then I examined Plato's assertion that the philosopher, lover of truth, will stand aloof of worldly desires. And I remarked on the two aspects in "the figure of a ship". First, what Plato criticized about democracy was that the direct democracy of his times provided an unfavorable structure where the people with expertise for the nation could not perform their proper roles. Secondly, the expertism required of the philosopher-ruler is not the same as the architectonic knowledge, groped out in Charmides and Euthydemus. He relies on the knowledge of the form of the good and seeks to realize the good through measure and symmetry. And it is also observed that the philosopher enters the political arena, not merely for the demanding that he repay the breeding and education he had received, but for the purpose of realization of the good. In short, Plato asserted philosopher-monarchism as a means to realize an ideal community dominated by intelligence(nous).
